Getting composition of single oil/gas fluid inclusion is very hard using normal laser ablation because of high laser energy. High laser energy will burn out the hydrocarbon in fluid inclusion and/or change the component of hydrocarbons. The best way is drilling a hole in fluid inclusion using femtosecond laser and vaporizing the hydrocarbons to GC for analysis.
The whole system was composed of femtosecond laser, modified microscope, heating stage and gas chromatograph. We call it on-line GC analysis of Fluid Inclusion by Femtosecond Laser Ablation (in short FLA-FI-GC). It also could be coupled with GC/MS for biomarkers.
The chromatogram of hydrocarbons in single oil/gas fluid inclusion has been got in Wuxi Geology Research Institute, SINOPEC. This technology could help us understanding the relationships of oil/oil and/or oil/source rocks in reservoir study. Another application is for restoring the paleo-pressure and helping build up the burial history.
